The Advisory Council for Information Services (ACIS) has approved the proposed Desktop and Laptop Encryption Policy at their December 2015 meeting. This policy states "To maintain the integrity and security of Lehigh’s data, any university desktop or laptop computer containing any University owned or maintained data covered by any state or federal statute, the disclosure of which exposes the University to possible substantial liability, must be encrypted using full-disk encryption software". While many Lehigh-owned computers are already encrypted, this policy makes it clear the types of data that necessitate the use of encryption software. The full policy is available at: http://lts.lehigh.edu/services/explanation/desktop-data-encryption-policy At this time, only Windows and Macintosh computers will be encrypted. Windows computers will be encrypted with BitLocker, while Macs will be encrypted using FileVault. LTS Computing consultants will be contacting faculty and staff to make arrangements to install the encryption software on existing computers. New computers will be encrypted by default when ordered through the standard purchasing process.
