Over 300 first-year Lehigh students -- some only hours after moving in -- hit the ground running at Linderman Library’s Bayer Galleria on Friday, August 20 for a hands-on introduction to select Special Collections material drawn from Lehigh history, literature, science and technology, and travel and exploration as part of the 5x10 program, “What’s So Special About Special Collections?”Arranged as a mini-exhibit, items on display included manuscripts, monographs, fanzine publications, drawings, and books chosen from over 60,000 items in the collection. Lehigh librarians and Special Collections staff explained the historical significance of artifacts spanning several millennia and their value to researchers and scholars around the world. While items that reflect the rich history of Lehigh University are a focus of both the collection and the event, students also got hands on with a 43-pound stiffening truss taken from the Brooklyn Bridge, a medieval choir manuscript, colonial Pennsylvania maps, and Sumerian cuneiform clay tablets.See what they saw! View more of the collection in the 5x10 Photo Album.

Beginning July 19, 2021, to dial an outside phone line from campus phones, users must dial 7 in front of the phone number instead of 9. This change is being made to prevent accidental misdials of 911. Read below for further instructions and note that the directions for reaching 911 remain the same and you do not need to dial 7 first.

Faculty: have you written a new book?

Digital archivist Alex Japha had a prescient peek at the future when in 2019 he suggested the topic of imaginary places as an upcoming Special Collections exhibit. A year later, the world would face travel restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving would-be globetrotters with only memories of past travels or visions of getaways that would have to wait. The topic of “imaginary places” became reality in the form of a Special Collections exhibit that opened in Spring 2021.

The Lehigh Libraries have partnered with 81 Eastern Academic Scholars Trust (EAST) libraries to preserve the scholarly record and participate in additional inter-library loan services via the Rosemont Shared Print Alliance. EAST libraries include academic libraries from Maine to Florida and large universities such as University of Maryland to smaller colleges such as Vassar College. These libraries agree to keep and preserve print titles that are unique, titles that are scarcely held, or titles that have high circulation and require more print copies to be retained in library collections. Lehigh has identified over 40,000 titles that will be retained in this partnership and will be available to the other partners for lending. The EAST partnership provides its members an excellent review of their scholarly collections and ensures that these collections are accessible to all the member libraries.

Passed in February 2018, federal law H.R. 582 placed new requirements on multi-line telephone systems (MLTSs) that are commonplace in hotels, office buildings, and university campuses. The bill requires MLTSs to allow users to directly dial 911 without additional digits or prefixes, such as “9” in order to reach an outside line.
