Happy Retirement Pat Ward and Brigit Gray

This fall, as Library and Technology Services unveiled a new cafe and merged service point for Help Desk and Circulation Services at Fairchild-Martindale Library, the Library Lending Services Team bade farewell to two longtime staff members, Patricia Ward and Brigit Gray.

Pat and Brigit both provided expert assistance to researchers at the public service desk, and each also played key roles in developing and maintaining the Libraries' Interlibrary Loan services, ILLiad, and PALCI E-ZBorrow.

Pat Ward is a native of South Bethlehem whose career at Lehigh Libraries spanned 43 years. Pat's role in Interlibrary Loan involved assisting researchers with borrowing articles, books, microfilm, and other materials through the online ILLiad system. Brigit Gray was proprietor of a South Bethlehem book and coffee business when she joined the Libraries in 2007. Initially Brigit provided evening and weekend services at FML but soon transitioned to her role with PALCI E-ZBorrow, providing interlibrary loan book borrowing and lending.

Lehigh faculty member Vera Stegmann, Department of Modern Languages and Literature, reflected on the retirements:

"My research is unthinkable without the work of Lehigh's Interlibrary Loan Office. Pat and Brigit were incredible at figuring out my research needs and locating books at other libraries within the U.S. and even abroad. I was often astounded at how fast books arrived after I ordered them through ILLiad or PALCI.  I also enjoyed many conversations, about academia and about life, with Pat and with Brigit. We will miss you and your encouraging words and work very much."

Mike Baylor, Faculty Emeritus in History added his perspective:

"I have found Lehigh's ILL services to be invaluable for my research in the history of Reformation Germany. I have requested items such as foreign M.A. theses from the 1950s and articles from obscure German regional periodicals; the ILL staff was able to track down these items, sometimes with less than complete bibliographical information, and provide them to me. The competence and efficiency of Lehigh's ILL staff is amazing and much appreciated."

Library and Technology Services wishes a fond farewell to Pat and Brigit and gratitude for their years of assistance to researchers and oversight of ILLiad and PALCI E-ZBorrow interlibrary loan services.

Lehigh Libraries' interlibrary loan services are available online: PALCI E-ZBorrow for Books and ILLiad for articles and book chapters. Online access to the Libraries’ Interlibrary Loan services is available at
