Featuring the exhibition Crochet Coral Reef: By Margaret and Christine Wertheim and the Institute For Figuring.

Reading and the Reef is a collaborative initiative between the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG) and the Lehigh University Libraries to celebrate the opening of the new reading room in the LUAG Main Gallery.

For several months staff from the Lehigh Libraries Technical Services Department have contributed their expertise to make public this collection of books about art and artists that has to this point operated behind the scenes, serving as reference materials for the Art Galleries. With the work of Libraries, these 2,011 books will be available to the public for the first time, exposing their published content as well as treasures such as inscriptions from the authors and artists, often with handwritten personal messages and dedications.

The librarians involved in this initiative, Lisa McColl, Cataloging/Metadata Librarian, and Greg Edwards, Senior Cataloging Assistant, cataloged and classified the books to enable their discovery in the library’s online catalog as well as give them a logical order, as prescribed by the Library of Congress.

Lisa McColl the lead of this project from the libraries side says: “Leaving the confines of the library to work with this unique collection of books, as well as getting to know the staff of LUAG, has been a wonderful experience and has increased my appreciation of the work and collections of LUAG and its staff.”

Lehigh’s University Librarian Boaz Nadav-Manes said “The connection between the Lehigh Libraries and the LUAG is essential to us, as we expand our own definitions of library work as well as strengthening our overall commitment towards the Lehigh campus and the broad community we serve.” Nadav-Manes added: “We are fortunate that the excellent LUAG art collections are not only celebrated on the Library walls, but that we also can share ideas about future programs and exhibits to jointly develop a continuum of cultural experience that transgress institutional boundaries to the benefit of our students, faculty, and visitors.”
